St. Barts Villa Rental Agencies :: Wimco

Wimco.pngIn my never ending quest to bring you the very best that St. Barts has to offer, I recently interviewed Stiles Bennet, Director of Marketing at Wimco, one of the best St Barts villa rental agencies on the island!

1. Who is Wimco?

Wimco was established in 1983 as the US based marketing, reservations and finance arm of Sibarth villa rentals in St Barts. Over time Wimco added other destinations in the Caribbean and Europe to its portfolio. St Barts remains the company's core focus. In all we represent 260 villas in St Barts, and we have exclusive marketing and reservations rights to 150 of those. Filling the 150 exclusive villas we represent along with Sibarth is our top goal.

Wimco is widely recognized as one of the top villa rental companies in the world due to its product expertise, the experience of its reservations agents, its product selection process insuring that we represent only the best homes in each destination, and its high quality of customer service.

2. Why is Wimco/Sibarth so strong on St Barts?
Sibarth was the first villa rental company on the island, established in 1976. Wimco was the first US based company dedicated to marketing St Barts. Over the years Wimco has invested heavily in marketing St Barts as a vacation destination, first through print ads, public relations, direct mail and trade shows, and more recently adding email and search engine marketing and website promotion. Each year Wimco pays for top travel writers from US and European magazines to come down to the island to learn about, and experience, St Barts, and to see the quality of our villas. In effect Wimco has acted as the unofficial Ministry of Tourism for the island since the '80's. This translates to greater awareness, and a large client base.

3. Why should people seeking out a villa in St Barts choose you?
There are several reasons who people interested in renting a villa in St Barts should use Wimco. Our agents know the villas intimately, we have 150 villas that are exclusively represented by Wimco/Sibarth, so we have the largest selection overall. we can arrange almost anything on the island, and our local partner Sibarth has the largest and most experienced on-island staff to get the clients to their villas from the airport, to deliver all the services the client requested, and to manage any issues that come up while the client is on the island.

4. How are bookings handled ? Do customers get an immediate answer?
Clients calling Wimco about a specific villa get an immediate answer to their booking request if they are asking for availability for one of our 150 exclusive villas. We can book those on the spot. That is the advantage of exclusivity.

For the other 110 villas we represent on a non-exclusive basis, we have live availability online so we can easily tell the client which dates the villa is available - that is an advantage over most local villa companies. That said, we still have to check first with the owner before we can confirm the villa booking with the client. This is the same process any other villa rental company has to go through for non-exclusive villas.

5. New villa rental agencies are popping up on the island; do you feel that customers in search of something "new" would prefer a new competitor to good ol' Wimco ?
There are several reasons to choose Wimco over a new villa rental company. A new company only has access to the non-exclusive villas that every other agency on the island has access to, no advantage there. Most new companies have only a small customer service and reservations staff. Wimco/Sibarth have a 50+ person staff on the island managing airport pick-ups, concierge services, villa maintenance and so much more, plus Wimco's 50+ person staff in the US managing reservations, customer service etc. Wimco/Sibarth have deep and long standing relationships with every restaurant and service provider on the island, so we can get that tough restaurant reservation, and can arrange a service that goes above and beyond the call of duty.

6. Let's talk a little bit about villa owners: why should they give you the keys to their villas?
Wimco/Sibarth together have the largest client base of any villa rental agency, and the largest marketing budget for attracting new clients to St Barts. As a general rule, owners come to Sibarth very early in the construction process to inquire about listing their villa with Sibarth because they understand that Wimco/Sibarth has the ability to fill their villa better than any other agency. We work closely with Sibarth Real Estate as well, so owners who are buying a villa in St Barts understand the advantages of putting their villa into the Wimco/Sibarth villa rental program. The number of villas that are exclusive to Sibarth/Wimco is growing, a sign that the owners understand the advantages of listing with us.

7. Do you feel that the villas in St Barts are moving to become "more upscale," quickly enough to compete with, say, Anguilla?
There are two issues here, one, how is the island of St Barts developing, and two, how does the quality of the villas on the island compare with villas on other islands. The island enjoys a unique advantage over most islands in the Caribbean. It is uncrowded, crime free, sophisticated in an understated way, and is stunningly beautiful. The shops and restaurants are second to none, and the French culture is a plus for most visitors.

The villas on St Barts are increasingly sophisticated, while still remaining comfortable. Its important that there always be a good selection of moderately priced villas so first time visitors to St Barts have a reasonably priced option. The villas at the high end of the market are smaller than those on Anguilla, Barbados or St Martin, but are not inferior from a features and amenities standpoint. One of the biggest issues clients bring to our attention is the intermittent electrical problems, which is out of the control of many villa owners. While there is some construction on the island, it is less than in many other islands, so the complaints about noise are no more than they'd be in Anguilla for instance.

8. So what does "a-day-on-the-job" look like for you? I don't want to give away the secret sauce for having a successful villa rental business in St Barts, however I will say that it's a pleasure marketing St Barts as a destination, so my job is very enjoyable

9. St Barts: new taxes, rising euro … what is the impact on vacationers?Everything in St Barts is priced in euros, so for the US based client the island has become more expensive than some neighboring islands in the Caribbean. The tax de sejour also increased the cost of coming to the island. Our villa rental business continues to grow, but we have heard that clients are eating out less often, and may be shopping less during their vacations.

St Barts Villa Rental Agencies :: L'Agence Villa Rentals and Real Estate

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Villa Enfin Water View.pngL'Agence is another villa rental agency that we have here on St Bart's Island; they, like many others, will meet you at the airport, arrange day trips and activities for you, and point you in the right direction when you're feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the fabulous goodness that St. Bart's island will bring, whether you've just gotten here or you're on your last day.

L'Agence's inventory of properties is wide in its range.  They vary from some of the most expensive properties on the island, to small and quaint villas for just two people.  They have a very friendly staff that is always more than happy to help you out.

Although I have not had any real direct dealings with them, I am investigating them a little further to see what I can find out for you.  In the meantime, if you want to head over to their website and poke around, you can find it here.

St. Barts Villa Rental Agencies :: Caraibes Welcome Center

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Gouveneur Beach 2.png

Here on St Barts Island, we have a number of different Villa Rental Agencies.  One is Caraibes Welcome Center.  Although I do not know much about them, they seem to have both car rentals and villa rentals.  It seems their approach is to take your request, and then match you up with a villa.  They have a few villas listed on their website, but they also hint about having others to choose from, although they don't specify what those are.  Positioned as an "information and reservation center," their website says:

Tell us when you want to come, your budget, and what sort of accommodations you prefer, and we'll reply promptly with suggestions tailored to your needs.

Not 100% sure what they're all about, but I'm working on finding out, and when I have more details, I'll let you all know!!

St Barts Island :: Anne Dentel Talks Shop

St Barts Island :: Anne Dentel
Photo Credit ~ St Barth Weekly

Anne Dentel.pngIn a new issue of St Barth Weekly, Anne Dentel, the new president of the Saint Barth Hotel Association, talks about a few things that might be of concern to our American tourists when they visit St Bart Island :: the value of the American dollar and the delays at St Martins airport.

Anne is a friend from the island, and I value her opinions very much.  Not only does she know every single villa on the island very, very well, she is the go-to person if you need to find a villa at the last minute.  So, when I saw her in the paper, I just had to share her thoughts with you!

First up, Anne tackled a subject that's on everyone's mind: the decline in the value of the American dollar.  According to Anne, the euro/dollar conversion rate is not going to affect the number of visitors to the island this year, but it may change the spending habits of visitors while they are on the island.  Herself and villa owners are more worried about next year and the low season as those reservations have not yet been made.  However, Anne is quite creative, and is investigating putting together some packages and deals to help bolster visitors and keep our little economy humming right along.  Stay tuned; if there are any deals to be had, I'll certainly pass them along!

Next, the delays at St Martin airport.  This has bothered me for quite some time.  Once you go through customs and leave the states, you go nowhere but St Martin.  Once in St Martin, it's not like you leave the airport before you hop on a plane to head here.  Yet, you must go through the same procedures over again; it really gets quite tiring.  What's worse, with these delays, many visitors that arrive to St. Martin after 4:00pm find that they are not able to catch a flight over to St Barts until the next day, or they are forced to take a boat over. As president of Saint Barth Hotel Association, Anne is working with other members of the association, and the president of the island council, Bruno Magras; their goal is to get this process working more efficiently so you can get here and start enjoying your vacation!!

Anne is a great resource for all things St Barts related.  She was an excellent choice to head up the Hotel Association, and I'm sure her work will be wonderful.  Remember, if you're ever in a pinch and need a villa at the last minute, she's the gal to call!

St Barts Villas :: Maco Lodge

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

You, my lucky readers, will be the first to preview my very first video posted on YouTube, about St Barts Villas.

Villa Maco Lodge is a rental property available through St Barth Properties and is described as "stunning."  And really, it is.  Just take a look at this photo of the living room area.

St Barts Villas :: Villa Maco Lodge

Villa Maco 1.pngLocated on Pointe Milou, this villa touts 6 bedrooms  and 6 1/2 bathrooms. It offers unmatched panoramic views of St Marteen, the sea, and the sun as it sets behind the hills of St Barts.

There are two buildings located on this property, one of which is the main house, and the other is spoken of as the "pool area." Both buildings offer luxurious accomodations and sleeping quarters, the second building actually has "kid's quarters" that are sectioned off with Chinese sliding doors and bunk beds that sleep four.

For those that want to relax, Villa Maco also offers a spa area with a massage table, set up next to a private jacuzzi.  Ligne St Barth products are lined up on deck if you choose to use them.

Did I mention that this property has two swimming pools? Very family friendly, a continental breakfast is served daily.  This truly is the picture of understated luxury .

Rental prices for the villa start at just $5,570/week starting in 2008.  If you're coming to St Barts, this villa is worth a look.

St Barts Villas :: Getting Americans To Love My Villa

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

St Barts Villas :: Domingue Villa

Thibault Villa.pngAs you all know, I own a villa on St Barts; and I have to be honest, I love it when Americans rent it.  In fact, 90% of our visitors are Americans, while 5% are from Canada, and the rest are French.  Overall, Americans just show so much more respect for our house, much more than our French guests.  They're also really good about leaving us very detailed feedback about what they would like to see different in our house. All this feedback has led to some changes around here.

Because of the large number of American guests that we host, we have given a lot of thought as to what we can do to make the house more comfortable for our guests.  We decided, first and foremost, that we'd need to put a Starbucks in every room…….no, I'm just kidding.  But we know how you Americans love your Starbucks, so we did put  a Nespresso machine in the kitchen, so you may enjoy espresso, à la European.

St Barts Villas :: Villa Domingue ~ Fitness Room

Thibault gym.pngWe've also installed air conditioning in every single room, heat in the pool and wi-fi on the top floor for those of you who can't vacation without your computer…..we'll be putting in a seperate wireless connection in the Summer of '08.  A gym with a television and DirecTV, straight from the East Coast.

But with all the renovations, we also removed the jacuzzi, for aesthetic reasons.  Although, according to the guest book, no one really seems to be missing it.
